After enduring a rough patch, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have staged a remarkable comeback in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The team, now invigorated under the new leadership of Rajat Patidar, has been on a winning streak, bringing the coveted playoffs within their reach.
A key factor in RCB's turnaround this season has been the emergence of Krunal Pandya as a true asset. The talented all-rounder has consistently delivered outstanding performances with both his batting and bowling prowess. Impressed by his contributions, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Pandya's abilities, suggesting that he possesses the qualities necessary to undertake the captaincy role.
With the kind of thinking that he has, often that leadership role will suit him well: Sunil Gavaskar
Following their decision to move forward without Faf du Plessis, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) entrusted the captaincy to Rajat Patidar. However, Patidar was not the sole candidate considered for this pivotal role. Krunal Pandya emerged as another strong contender, having consistently demonstrated his ability to influence game outcomes. His contributions in the current season have been significant, amassing 97 runs and securing 13 crucial wickets. Notably, his unbeaten innings of 73 runs against Delhi Capitals played a key role in securing a resounding win for the franchise.
Despite the franchise's ultimate decision to appoint Patidar as their skipper, batting great Sunil Gavaskar voiced his support for Pandya. Gavaskar believes that the accomplished all-rounder not only warrants consideration for the captaincy but also possesses the requisite leadership experience to excel in such a position.
“Krunal Pandya is an outstanding cricketer. Batting, bowling, fielding – he is in the game every single moment – Nobody considers him for captaincy, but with the kind of thinking that he has, often that leadership role will suit him well,” Gavaskar said during a conversation with Star Sports.
For the past 17 years, IPL trophy has remained elusive for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a dream yet to be realised. However, this season has brought a shift in their fortunes under their newly appointed captain. Following an electrifying victory against Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match, the team has maintained an exceptional level of performance. Across ten matches played so far, the franchise led by Patidar has secured an impressive seven wins, currently holding the third position on the points table with 14 points. They now stand just two points away from clinching a playoff berth. As they prepare to face Chennai Super Kings (CSK), their focus will be on securing those crucial two points to guarantee their place in the next stage of the tournament.
