Former West Indies captain Kieron Pollard is not just a player anymore. Pollard is a part of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians (MI). Pollard is also an integral part of MI New York franchise. In MI New York's campaign opener, Pollard took his side to a winning position and then led to a batting collapse as well. The all-rounder suffered a brain fade as he was caught short of the crease by Daryl Mitchell's direct hit, simply because he was carelessly jogging to the non-striker's end.
Pollard walked in to bat in the 14th over. He got the required run rate down in the 17th over bowled by Mitchell. He hit the New Zealand all-rounder three fours and a six. On the fifth ball, he played the ball towards short mid-wicket and was jogging towards the non-striker's end. Mitchell was quick on his feet as he had a shy at the stumps and succeeded. Till the time Pollard realised that he may get run out, it was too late. He departed for a 16-ball 32.
When he got out, MI New York needed 27 runs from 19 balls. But his wicket caused panic. Monank Patel went for a non-existent run and was run out by Mitchell on the next delivery. He departed for a 44-ball 62. After two set batters' dismissals, MI New York could not get over the line and lost the match by three runs.
What captains said about run outs
MI New York captain Nicholas Pooran did not play the blame game after the defeat. He tried to see the funny side of it.
"Cricket is very funny, it’s never over till the final ball is bowled, tough one to take," Pooran said in the post-match presentation.
On the other hand, Texas Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis lauded Mitchell for his comeback. After leaking boundaries, Mitchell effected two run outs. He bowled the last over as well and defended nine runs.
"Felt like a bit of a steal, we were brilliant in the first ten overs, then they played some good cricket, then we got a few run-outs and that changed the game. He (Mitchell) had a tough start but came back and bowled really well in the crucial last over," Du Plessis said.
