Out-of-form Punjab Kings (PBKS) batting all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct during match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 8.
The IPL media released did not specify the incident, similar to when Gujarat Titans (GT) pacer Ishant Sharma was fined. As per the released Maxwell admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 which relates to “Abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a Match."
Here's what the rule says -
“Article 2.2 includes any action(s) outside the course of normal cricket actions, such as hitting or kicking the wickets and any action(s) which deliberately (i.e. intentionally), recklessly or negligently (in either case even if accidental) results in damage to the advertising boards, boundary fences, dressing room doors, mirrors, windows and other fixtures and fittings. For example, this offence may be committed, without limitation, when a Player swings his/her bat vigorously in frustration and causes damage to an advertising board."
Maxwell fails with bat, gets the breakthrough with ball
Once again, Maxwell struggled with the bat. He was dismissed by his nemesis, the veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. He got out caught and bowled after scoring just one run from two balls. The Australian tried to make up for it with the ball. The off-spinner got CSK opener Rachin Ravindra stumped in the seventh over of the innings. He broke the opening partnership between Ravindra and Devon Conway. The young Kiwi scored 36 runs from 23 balls.
Maxwell's rut with bat continues, PBKS back to winning ways
So far, the 36-year-old has scored 31 runs from three innings. On April 8, despite the collapse, PBKS managed to post 219/6 on the board. While five of the top six batters returned for single-digit scores, young opener Priyansh Arya smashed 103 off just 42 balls. Later, Shashank Singh's fifty and Marco Jansen's cameo helped the hosts set a challenging target.
CSK started well but could not keep up with the required run rate. Devon Conway's half-century, Shivam Dube's 42-run knock, and MS Dhoni's 12-ball 27 cameo went in vain as CSK lost the match by 18 runs. PBKS registered their third win of the season whereas CSK were handed their fourth defeat from five games.
