Pat Cummins wants a break next year amid a jam-packed international cricket calendar.

Cummins missed tournaments and bilateral series due to stress in lower back.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins may skip the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 as he remains committed to Australian cricket, especially Test cricket. Cummins, who missed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026 due to injuries in addition to a better part of the Ashes 2025-26, said that he will make the call to the franchise considering injuries setbacks he has faced of late. Cummins wants to play the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2027 and has hinted at skipping IPL 2027 as he wants defend the ODI World Cup title.

“Something has got to give at some stage next year and it’s not going to be Test matches or an ODI World Cup,” Cummins told the Age.

Cummins intends to play in next year’s Ashes and the ODI World Cup 2027. If he plays for the entirety of five-Test series on Indians soil, he may take a break and not play in IPL 2027 to manage his workload.

“I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything.

“The priorities for me are always the Test matches and that ODI World Cup. I dare say if I play all of India, I need some sort of break before a pretty gruelling Ashes series.”

In IPL 2026, Cummins missed the first half as he was not 100 per cent fit. After getting clearance from Cricket Australia (CA), he played seven league stage games and the eliminator. He claimed eight wickets at an average of 38.37.

Kishan to lead? Search for pace-bowling all-rounder begins early?

Earlier, Ishan Kishan had led SRH in Cummins’ absence and Abhishek Sharma was named his deputy. From seven games, Kishan led SRH to victory in four of them. If the Australian pacer pulls out of IPL 2027, Kishan is automatic choice to captain.

In that case, SRH will have their work cut out for the IPL 2027 mini-auction. They will have Rs 18 crore to find an overseas pacer to fine-tune their lineup, or a pace-bowling all-rounder. They may look to rope in Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya who has reportedly made up his mind to leave the franchise.
