Story Highlights:

KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane suffered cramps after the 4th over of MI's innings.

Rohit Sharma went on to score 78 runs from 38 deliveries.

Mumbai Indians (MI) veteran opener Rohit Sharma punished Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacers with his blazing half-century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash on March 29. Rohit also teased and danced to amuse KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane who was walking off the field after receiving medical attention after experiencing cramps. KKR physio and Rohit’s opening partner also smiled as they saw 38-year-old’s act to lift the spirits of his Mumbai teammate Rahane.

Rahane left the field after the fourth over and vice-captain Rinku Singh led KKR as Rohit and Rickelton went after the bowlers. Rohit reached his fifty from just 23 balls, his fastest of IPL career. his previous fastest came against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2015 final.

MI lost a few wickets but chased down the target of 221 with five balls to spare and six wickets in hand.

Rohit breaks Kohli’s record

Rohit broke Virat Kohli's record for most runs against a single opponent in T20s. From 36 innings, he has 1,161 runs against KKR. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Kohli has 1,160 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Rahane hits fifty, backs inexperienced pace attack

After the match, Rahane ensured that his injury isn’t serious and he should be fit for the next game. In the first innings, he had opened the innings with Finn Allen and scored 67 runs from 40 balls, featuring three fours and five sixes. He stayed at the crease till the 14th over.

Rahane rued not having an experienced bowling attack with Matheesha Pathirana unavailable, Harshit Rana ruled out and Cameron Green not bowling. He sees it as an opportunity for others.

"With our bowling attack, the guys are really inexperienced. Vaibhav (Arora), who did well in the last year, he's actually leading the attack and then (we have) Karthik Tyagi and (Blessing) Muzarabani, though he has played international cricket but the IPL experience is completely different," Rahane said in the post-match press conference.

"It is challenging because our bowlers are injured. But again, there is an opportunity for other players to show up and do really well and make a name for themselves.

"As I said, Karthik, Vaibhav, Muzarabani, Saurabh (Dubey), we got Umran (Malik) as well. Navdeep Saini, who has been really impressive during practise sessions and matches. Unfortunately, Cameron Green cannot bowl at this moment. When he starts bowling, the combination will be slightly different," he added.

KKR will go up against Ishan Kishan's Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in their first home game. SRH lost their opening match comprehensively to defending champions RCB.
