In their first home game of the IPL 2025 season, Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) hosted Shreyas Iyer's Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Ekana cricket stadium on April 1. After winning the coin toss Shreyas Iyer elected to field first. A unique moment in IPL history occurred when captains Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer walked out for the toss, jointly achieving a record that has never been witnessed before.
Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant combine to create history during LSG vs PBKS clash
The match between LSG and PBKS marked a massive milestone as the first game in the IPL's history to feature two players with individual salaries exceeding Rs 25 crore. Rishabh commands a salary of Rs 27 crore while Iyer joined PBKS for a whopping Rs 26.75 crore.
Notably, Iyer became the first player in the league to surpass the Rs 25 crore salary mark, with PBKS securing his services through a successful bid. Rishabh was initially retained by Delhi Capitals (DC) for Rs 20.75 crore, utilising their Right to Match card. However, LSG then placed a higher bid of Rs 27 crore for Rishabh, which DC chose not to match, leading to Rishabh's move to the Lucknow-based franchise.
Prior to Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, Mitchell Starc held the record of being the most expensive player acquisition in IPL history. He was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore during the IPL 2024 mini-auction. Subsequently, he joined the Delhi Capitals for Rs 11.75 crore in the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
Talking about the match, Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first. They made one change to their playing XI, bringing in Lockie Ferguson. On the other hand, LSG opted to maintain their winning combination and did not make any changes to their lineup.
