Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced injured Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards' replacement for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Ahead of the season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 28, SRH have acquired the services of 35-year-old England left-arm pacer David Payne's services.
Edwards was ruled out of IPL 2026 due to a foot injury. He was brought in the mini-auction for Rs 3 crore. His replacement, Payne will join the franchise for Rs 1.5 crore.
Who is David Payne?
Payne made his ODI debut for England in 2022 against Netherlands. Most recently, he became Perth Scorchers' hero in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 final against Sydney Sixers. He picked up three wickets for 18 runs and became the 'Player of the match' in the final.

Payne is yet to make his IPL debut. He played Under-19 World Cup alongside the likes of Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Jos Buttler and James Vince but hasn't got much success in international cricket.

Payne is a T20 freelancer. The 35-year-old has played 233 T20s so far, claiming 304 wickets at an average of 21.16, featuring a fifer and five four-wicket hauls. He is on a title-winning spree. Earlier this year, he played for Desert Vipers and won the title as well. He claimed 17 wickets from nine games in the season.
