Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant is known for his unorthdox shots to score big runs. But, Pant was not at his best in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and in the fourth Test of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he miscued a shot to third man. The manner of dismissal drew the ire of legendary Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar who called his shot selection 'stupid, stupid, stupid!'. Months later, Pant was seen mimicing Gavaskar's iconic commentary as he lashed out at the wicketkeeper-batter who he often praises.
"Stupid, Stupid, STUPID! You've got two fielders there, and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you've been caught. That is throwing away your wicket. You cannot say that is your natural game. I'm sorry. That is not your natural game. This is a stupid shot. This is letting your team down badly. You have to understand the situation as well." Gavaskar said during commentary on ABC Sport.
"He should not be going in that [India's] dressing room, he should be going in the other dressing room," Gavaskar added.
Pant, the most expensive IPL player
In the mega auction, Pant became the most epensive player in the history of the league as LSG roped him in for a whopping Rs 27 crore. His former franchise, Delhi Capitals (DC) could not retain him as LSG raised the bid to Rs 27 crore after they exercised the Right to Match (RTM) card.
Pant wants teammates to young from experienced players
Ahead of the IPL 2025, LSG posted a video of Pant motivating his troops, asking them to learn from the management and experienced players.
"I feel there is a lot of experience in the group. I think management has a lot of experience, we have a lot of senior players. Keep sharing your experience with the younger guys and let that experience flow into the younger group,” Pant told his LSG teammates.
“We want to create a place where people can come and express themselves. It’s easier to say than to do it becuase it requires a lot of effort from each & every individual. It’s not just the management. I think it’s because of the players. We can create that environment. What I’ve always felt is that if you back your players and give them enough trust, they can perform at any level,” Pant added.
Pant who warmed the benches throughout ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be seen in LSG colours when they take on DC in Visakhapatnam on March 24.
