Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill stitched a 105-run opening stand during GT vs CSK clash

This was Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill's 7th 100-plus partnership in IPL history

Gujarat Titans openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill etched their names into the history books by stitching together another magnificent 100-run partnership against the Chennai Super Kings during a crucial IPL 2026 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In doing so, the dynamic duo shattered an all-time tournament record and equaled a prestigious global T20 milestone previously shared by the iconic pairing of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

After CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to field, the GT opening pair continued their sublime form this season by putting on a commanding 125-run stand. Both batsmen brought up fluent half-centuries during the knock, simultaneously crossing the 600-run milestone for the season. As the tournament stands, Gill and Sudharsan occupy the top spots on the tournament's run-scoring charts, locked in an intense head-to-head battle for the coveted Orange Cap.

Sai Sudharsan-Shubman Gill's historic partnership

This exceptional performance marked their seventh century partnership as an opening pair, the highest ever achieved by any opening duo in IPL history. By reaching this milestone, they eclipsed the previous record they had shared with two notable Sunrisers Hyderabad opening pairs from past and present seasons. In the broader landscape of T20 cricket, Pakistan's Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are now the only opening combination ahead of them, having opened the batting together for eight century stands.

While Sudharsan initially began his Gujarat Titans career batting at number three, his chemistry with Gill has translated across the batting order. This latest partnership marks their tenth century stand overall across all wickets, equaling the world record for the most 100-run partnerships by any pair in T20 cricket history. They now share this elite global benchmark with just four other pairs, a club that notably features Virat Kohli twice alongside different batting partners.

Sudharsan-Gill breaks Kohli-De Villiers' record

Furthermore, this encounter marked the 21st time that Gujarat Titans duo has put together a partnership of fifty runs or more in the IPL. This achievement ties them for the all-time tournament record alongside the legendary Royal Challengers Bangalore pairings of AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli, as well as Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli. Notably, 15 of these fifty-plus stands have been forged while opening the batting, placing them second in league history behind the iconic tandem of David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.

The prolific pair also became the first opening combination in IPL history to record two century partnerships against the Chennai Super Kings. In the broader history of the tournament, only two other pairs have managed multiple hundred-run stands against the Super Kings—Glenn Maxwell alongside David Warner, and Manish Pandey with David Warner. Furthermore, the Gill-Sudharsan partnership now holds the record for the most aggregate partnership runs against the Men in Yellow with 470 runs, comfortably eclipsing the previous benchmark of 370 runs set by Kohli and De Villiers.

Their relentless run-scoring has rapidly elevated them up the all-time IPL partnership charts. They now sit second for the most aggregate runs scored by an opening pair in the league's history with 1,942 runs, overtaking the tally of Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli during this innings, with only Warner and Dhawan left ahead of them. When looking at partnerships for any wicket, the young duo has climbed to third place overall with 2,760 runs, trailing only the legendary standard-setters AB de Villiers and Kohli (3,123 runs) and Gayle and Kohli (2,787 runs).
