From 62 for 2 to 95 all out. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced a batting collapse of epic propritions as they failed to chase down 112 against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The collapse started with KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane got out lbw in leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal's first over. But, Rahane was not out and had he opted for DRS, the hawkeye would have showed that the impact on pad was outside off stump. Rahane admits it was his mistake but said that his batting partner Angkrish Raghuvanshi wasn't clear and his 'maybe' call led to him walking out of the ground.
As Rahane was hit on the pad and the umpire raised his finger, he started walking. It was Raghuvanshi who urged him to take DRS but from the angle he saw the ball, he wasn't clear and said that it may turn out to be the umpire's call. Rahane did not want to chance it on a 'maybe' and started walking off. Even though it was umpire's call, KKR would have lost a review.
"As a batter, I thought that I could save the review for later. It shouldn't happen that I take a review and lose it, then we are only left with one review," Rahane said in the post-match press conference. "The communication between the two batsmen [him and Raghuvanshi] wasn't that clear. If someone clearly tells you that the impact can be out or it can miss, you take a review as a batter.
"But generally, the batsmen in front of you, you think about what they say. The communication wasn't that clear: 'Maybe it could be the umpire's call, maybe it could be hitting.' That's why I didn't take a review. But again, no complaints. Apart from that, we also were pretty bad as a batting unit. And that was the reason we lost today."
Chahal capitalises on Rahane's mistake
Rahane departed after scoring 17 runs from as many deliveries. In the next over, Raghuvanshi failed the Chahal challenge as well and was dismissed for 28-ball 37. Chahal in his third over dismissed Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh off consecutive deliveries to put immense pressure on KKR.
This was KKR's fourth defeat from seven games in the ongoing season. Their next match is against Gujarat Titans (GT) at home on April 21.
