Mumbai Indians' (MI) young batter Tilak Varma was at the centre of the controversy when he was retired out in the run chase against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Many criticised the move from MI's coaching staff. Later, it was revealed that he had a finger injury which hampered with his big hitting. The southpaw followed it up with two consecutive fifties and opened up on the controversy. He backed the MI team management's decision and revealed that he told the coach Mahela Jayawardene that he is comfortable batting at any position.
“Nothing, I was just thinking that they have taken the decision for the team’s purpose. So I was taking in the positive way and didn’t take it in the negative way. But the main thing is how you take it's more important. So I was thinking it that way. I just want to be comfortable wherever I bat. So I said that to coach and staff that ‘don't worry wherever you play me I'm comfortable and I'll give my best,” said Varma on Star Sports.

Against DC, he walked out to bat at no.4 in the eighth over. He scored 59 runs from 33 balls, including six fours and three sixes. He helped MI post a total of 205/5. He departed in the 20th over bowled by Mukesh Kumar.
In the ongoing season, he is MI's second-highest run-scorer with 210 runs from six innings at an average of 42.
