SRH suffered a four-wicket defeat against MI

Mumbai Indians (MI) secured their third win of the ongoing IPL 2025 by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by four wickets at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on April 17. Riding on Will Jacks' all-round heroics MI overhauled the 163-run target with 11 balls to spare. This win adds two crucial points to their tally, bringing their total to 6 points on the IPL 2025 points table.

Pat Cummins admits SRH's misery in IPL 2025 after MI jolt

Meanwhile, SRH's misery only got compounded as they suffered the fifth defeat of the season. SRH captain Pat Cummins admitted that it hasn't clicked for them so far in the ongoing season. He also said that one needs to play well away from home to make it to the final.

"It wasn't the easiest wicket. Few runs short, we would have liked a couple more with the bat. Tricky wicket, when you come here you expect it to be really fluent and fast, just wasn't that. They bowled really well, shut down a lot of our hitting areas. I thought we had all our bases covered, with 160 you feel like you are a little bit short. We gave it a good crack with the ball. We thought we needed wickets, we had plenty of death bowling, we knew the impact player would bowl 1-2 overs that's why we went with Rahul. You have got to play well away from home to make the final, unfortunately it hasn't clicked so far this season, we have a short break and we go again. Every game we talk about assessing, the boys did well to get through the powerplay and there wasn't reckless hitting, next game is at home and we know that venue pretty well," Cummins said in the post-match presentation.

Talking about the match, after being asked to bat first, the usually explosive opening pair of SRH, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, were unable to provide their team with a rapid start to the innings on this occasion. Although they managed to keep their wickets intact in the initial overs, Abhishek did manage to find the boundary on a few occasions. However, their combined efforts only resulted in SRH reaching a score of 43 runs during the crucial powerplay overs. Abhishek's innings came to an end after scoring a solid 40 runs off 28 deliveries, while his opening partner, Travis Head, had a disappointing night, scoring a run-a-ball 28. Will Jacks had a notable performance with the ball for Mumbai Indians, successfully dismissing both Head and Ishan Kishan for low scores, significantly impacting SRH's progress. Heinrich Klaasen's aggressive innings of 37 runs, coming off just 28 deliveries, briefly suggested that he might propel Sunrisers Hyderabad towards a substantial total nearing the 200-run mark. However, his promising knock was brought to an end by a perfectly executed yorker from Jasprit Bumrah, which dismantled his leg stump. Ultimately, Abhishek Sharma's score of 40 runs stood as the highest individual contribution for the SRH team, as they concluded their innings with a total of 162 runs.

While chasing, MI got off to a fiery start, thanks to their former captain Rohit Sharma, who batted aggressively at a strike rate exceeding 160. His signature pull shot made a reappearance against Pat Cummins, sending the ball soaring over backward square leg for a six. However, Rohit's innings was cut short at 26 runs when Cummins himself took the catch at point. The innings then gained momentum through a crucial 52-run partnership between Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav. Although Suryakumar departed after scoring 28 runs, the responsibility of guiding MI towards the finish line was then shouldered by Hardik Pandya and Tilak Verma. Their 34-run partnership proved vital for Mumbai, especially after they had lost four wickets at regular intervals, creating some tension in the chase. Despite a spirited bowling performance from Pat Cummins, who claimed 3 wickets, his efforts ultimately ended in vain as SRH succumbed to another defeat. Even though Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir were dismissed with just a single run needed for win, it was Tilak Verma, who remained unbeaten on 21 runs, who ultimately scored the winning runs for the Mumbai Indians, securing their 4-wicket triumph on home ground.
