Kohli was made to pick between Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle

India's superstar batter Virat Kohli’s legacy as one of the premier top-order batters in T20 history is firmly established. While critics occasionally debate his strike rate or his anchor role, his remarkable longevity and sheer volume of runs remain unparalleled. Over a career spanning fifteen years, he demonstrated a unique ability to adapt as the format evolved, maintaining his dominance even as the game became increasingly aggressive.

Rohit or Gayle? Virat Kohli names the greatest T20I opener ever

His tactical journey in the shortest format saw him transition from the middle order to a permanent fixture at number three. However, some of his most iconic performances occurred when Royal Challengers Bengaluru promoted him to the top of the order. It was from this opening position that he eventually realized his greatest ambitions, securing both Indian Premier League success and a T20 World Cup title.

In a recent promotional segment for the IPL 2026 season, RCB put Kohli on the spot to identify the greatest T20I opener through a 'This or That' challenge. The game functioned as a bracket-style tournament; for instance, after selecting Adam Gilchrist over Sunil Narine, Gilchrist was then compared to the next contender. This process of elimination continued until the final pairing was revealed.

It is notable how Kohli repeatedly clarified throughout the video that his evaluations were strictly confined to the T20I format. While he placed Chris Gayle ahead of Rohit Sharma in this specific category, the assessment would likely shift significantly in a 50-over context, where Rohit is widely regarded as one of the premier ODI openers in history. This format-specific logic also explained why Kohli ranked Virender Sehwag above his own idol, Sachin Tendulkar; despite Tendulkar's legendary status in Tests and ODIs, his limited appearances in T20Is made Sehwag the more impactful choice for the shortest format.

Fans will soon see Kohli return to the pitch as the 2026 IPL season gets underway. Royal Challengers Bengaluru is scheduled to kick off their campaign on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where they will face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the high-octane opening fixture.
