PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer played a match-winning knock of 33-ball 69 against SRH

PBKS crushed SRH by six wickets

Following a devastating defeat in last year’s final, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have returned this season with a clear hunger to finally secure their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title. However, captain Shreyas Iyer remains grounded regarding their championship ambitions, candidly acknowledging that while the desire is there, realising that goal will require an immense and sustained effort from the entire squad.

This year, we want to lift it: Shreyas Iyer on winning IPL 2026 title

Iyer certainly led by example in their latest outing on April 11, delivering a commanding, unbeaten 69 off just 33 deliveries. His captain's knock was instrumental in guiding PBKS to a convincing six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, proving that the team has the firepower to compete with the league's heavy hitters.

The chase of a formidable 220-run target was made to look remarkably simple, thanks in large part to the foundation laid by the opening pair. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh ignited the innings with a blistering 99-run partnership, setting a high-octane tempo that allowed Iyer to step in and clinically finish the job at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium.

"They're delivering on the field. I keep reiterating every now and then, you have to be in the present. Ricky (Ponting) also takes a lot of importance in this aspect. Even last year, we came so close to winning the trophy. This year, we want to lift it. It will take a lot of effort to envision that," Shreyas said at the presentation ceremony.

Shreyas Iyer adjudged Player of the Match after match-winning knock vs SRH

After being named Player of the Match, Shreyas Iyer was quick to credit his opening batsmen for their pivotal role in the victory. He lauded their aggressive approach at the top of the order, noting that their ability to take risks early on shifted the pressure onto the opposition right from the start. The captain emphasised that the explosive batting displayed during the powerplay provided the perfect platform for the rest of the lineup. By establishing such a dominant foundation, the openers allowed the middle order to navigate the chase with greater confidence and tactical flexibility.

"Firstly, we've got a phenomenal start. When you're chasing 220, you need that start. Pleasing to the eye, proper cricketing shots. Steadied the rhythm at the start. Not easy, but maintaining that momentum - I needed to give myself time," Iyer added.

PBKS will next face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 19 at the same venue. Meanwhile, SRH will now take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Hyderabad on April 13.
