England’s left-arm spinner Liam Dawson wreaked havoc in the Domestic One-Day Cup 2023 semi-final against Warwickshire. The Hampshire spinner rushed through the Warwickshire batting lineup after they lost their top-order batters to Keith Barker. Dawson registered the best bowling figures for Hampshire in List A cricket to help his side reach the final with a comfortable nine-wicket win.

Dawson’s record-breaking seven-fer

On a wicket that kept low at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Dawson was introduced in the 14th over of the innings. Michael Burgess was done by the lack of bounce in the pitch as he got bowled. A few overs later, Jacob Bethell decided to go down the track but his bat was nowhere near the ball. Bethell ended up getting bowled as well.

In his sixth over, Dawson struck thrice. Ethan Brookes was drawn into a drive and was caught at covers. Jake Lintott tried to employ the sweep shot but the top-edge landed in short fine leg's hands. Then Danny Briggs could not pick the length and got lbw on the back foot.

In his next over, he struck twice to bundle out Warwickshire for 93 with 24.1 overs left in the innings. Henry Brookes played across the line and got caught by wicketkeeper Ben Brown. The last wicket to fall was Oliver Hannon-Dalby who could not pick the line and got bowled in an attempt to play forward defence. Dawson finished with seven wickets for 15 runs from 6.5 overs.

Easy run chase

In the run chase, Hampshire skipper Nick Gubbins struggled to rotate the strike. Lintott got his wicket in the 10th over. No more wickets fell for Hampshire in the run chase. Fletcha Middleton and Tom Prest chased down the total with nine wickets in hand and 185 balls to spare. Middleton remained unbeaten for 54 off 65 balls including seven fours. prest was in a hurry to finish it off with a 25-ball 31 featuring two fours and a six.

Dawson snubbed from England squad

The 33-year-old Dawson played his last ODI against Australia in November 2022. He is not a part of England's provision squad for the upcoming World Cup. Also, the spin-bowling all-rounder was not considered when Jack Leach was injured before the Ashes 2023 and Moeen Ali was asked to take a U-turn on his retirement.
