England all-rounder Ben Stokes sounded alarm bells ahead of ODI World Cup 2023 with a record-breaking 182-run knock against New Zealand in his comeback series. Stokes went on a rampage at Kennington Oval, London to register the highest score by an England batter in the ODI format. Jason Roy held the previous record with a 180-run knock against Australia in Melbourne in 2018.

Stokes' 182 is the third-highest score by a batter against New Zealand in ODIs. The top spot is occupied by Indian opener Shubman Gill who scored 208 earlier this year. Former Indian opener Sachin Tendulkar scored an unbeaten 186 in Hyderabad in 1999.

The previous highest individual score by an England batter against New Zealand in the format was former captain David Gower's 158 in Brisbane in 1983.

Stokes came out to bat in the third over. Trent Boult made the new ball talk again and got the wickets of opener Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root in consecutive overs. Stokes started off slow in the powerplay overs. In the 13th over, he hit Lockie Ferguson for three boundaries. The left-handed batter reached his half-century from 44 balls. He shifted gears and reached his fourth ODI century from 76 deliveries in the 30th over.

He shared a 199-run partnership for the third wicket with Dawid Malan who missed his century and got dismissed by Boult for 96 in the 31st over. Stokes continued to attack and reached his 150 from 106 balls. He broke Roy's record with a six off Ben Lister in the 45th over. But he could not go on to become England's first ODI double centurion. Stokes went for a big shot but got caught at deep mid-wicket by Will Young. His 182 came from 124 balls and was laced with 15 fours and nine sixes.

After Stokes' wicket, England got all out for 368 with five balls left in the innings. Boult picked up a fifer despite England posting a massive total on the board after Tom Latham won the toss and opted to field first.
