Shivam Dube openly defended Suryakumar Yadav amidst latter's lean patch wit the bat

Across 14 T20Is in 2025, Suryakumar has scored just 201 runs

India's star all-rounder Shivam Dube has come out in strong defense of captain Suryakumar Yadav, despite the skipper's recent struggles with the bat. Looking ahead to the T20 World Cup in early 2026, Dube stated that Suryakumar remains a rare talent capable of winning matches single-handedly. He argued that a temporary dip in form does not diminish the captain's overall value to the squad, noting that his impact on the game often transcends what is visible in the scorecards.

The support comes at a critical time, as the statistics for 2025 highlight a significant slump for the top-ranked batter. Throughout 14 T20 International appearances this year, Surya has managed only 201 runs, resulting in a modest average of 14.36 and a strike rate of 126.42, figures well below his career standards. His difficulties have continued in the current five-match series against South Africa, most recently falling for just 12 runs to Lungi Ngidi during the third T20I in Dharamshala.

'He’s the kind of player who can win you five out of five matches on his own'

Public scrutiny has intensified as it has been over a year since Suryakumar last recorded a T20I half-century, dating back to October 2024. While critics question whether his lean patch is a cause for long-term concern, Dube remains steadfast in his belief in the leader's abilities. By labeling him a 'match-winner', Dube signaled that the team management still views Surya as a cornerstone of their strategy for the upcoming global tournament. According to Dube, the captain’s aggressive and proactive mindset remains unchanged, regardless of whether he is currently scoring runs.

“He’s the kind of player who can win you five out of five matches on his own. If he’s not scoring right now, it doesn’t mean he’s not a good player," Dube said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the India vs South Africa fourth T20I.

“He’s one of the best. No one can do what he does. Yes, runs have dried up, but his form will return at the right time. He can explode at any moment," he added.

Dube also stood up for vice-captain Shubman Gill, who has faced similar scrutiny regarding his recent T20I performances. Dube highlighted Gill’s track record, pointing out that the young opener has been a consistent performer for India across formats for several years. By emphasizing Gill's long-term contributions, Dube suggested that a temporary dip in form shouldn't overshadow the talent and reliability he brings to the national side.

“Whether he scores or not, he’s the same guy. He always wants to do something for the team. He’s innovative and always a threat. Even when his form dips, his numbers are still very good. He’s been performing for India for many years," Dube signed off.
