South Africa’s Aiden Markram has scripted history at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati by breaking the record for most catches in a Test match. Markram got the record in his name with the catch of Washington Sundar off Simon Harmer’s bowling in the second session of Day 5 of the second Test. This was Markram’s ninth catch in the Test.
The previous record belonged to India's Ajinkya Rahane who took eight catches at Galle against Sri Lanka in August 2015. For South Africa, Bert Vogler (1910), Bruce Mitchell (1931), Jacques Kallis (2012), Graeme Smith (2012) and David Bedingham (2025) held the previous record.
In the first innings, Markram took five catches. He took the catches of opener KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav.
In the second innings, he took catches of Sai Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant and Sundar. Most of Markram’s catches were in slip position.
Markram’s reaction to breaking world record
Markram credited the bowlers for creating chances, leading to him breaking the world record.
“Credit to the bowlers, they get the balls in the right areas and you try to catch them and make them happy. Spinning the ball different ways helps in conditions like this. You have to do that for long periods of time and that's where the control comes in. Credit to the two, they bowled very well,” he said after South Africa beat India by 408 runs.
This is the first time in 25 years South Africa have completed a cleansweep on Indian soil. Markram registered scores of 38 and 29 in the Guwahati Test.
