India’s top-order batter Virat Kohli achieved yet another feat as he continued to pile on runs in the ODI series against South Africa. In the second ODI at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur, he registered his 53rd ODI century which is also his 100th fifty-plus score at home in international cricket. He became only the fourth cricketer to achieve this feat in international cricket.
The first spot belongs to Sachin Tendulkar who has 112 fifty-plus scores at home. He is followed by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting (106) and former South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis (106).
Kohli continued his splendid form in the series. After a 135-run knock in the series opener at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi, he scored another century. He reached his century from 90 deliveries.
This is Kohli’s 84th century in international cricket (including 30 in Tests and one in T20Is). This is the 11th instance in his ODI career where he has scored two consecutive centuries.
Big partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad
Kohli walked out to bat in the fifth over as Rohit Sharma lost his wicket to Nandre Burger. Yashasvi Jaiswal could not go on to get a big score and was dismissed by Marco Jansen. Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad shared a 195-run partnership for the third wicket. Gaikwad went on to score his maiden ODI century from just 77 deliveries. Gaikwad returned to ODIs after a long gap of two years.
Gaikwad lost his wicket to Jansen for an 83-ball 105. Kohli did not bat in the slog overs either as he had a soft dismissal against Lungi Ngidi. The 37-year-old scored 102 runs from 93 deliveries. His knock was laced with seven fours and two sixes. India were 284/4 in 39.1 overs when Kohli headed back to the pavilion.
