The run-machine Virat Kohli roared with the bat yet again, this time in the second ODI against South Africa, where he cracked another century. Riding on the back of a scintillating centurion knock in the first ODI, the King Kohli returned to hammer one more in Raipur on December 3. But what caught everyone's attention was head coach Gautam Gambhir's reaction after the batting juggernaut's 102-run knock.

Virat Kohli lights up Raipur with 2nd consecutive century

Following up his century in the Ranchi opener with another sensational hundred, reaching the landmark in just 90 balls. This feat extended his record to 53 centuries in the format, further silencing any lingering critics. This knock also marked his 84th international ton overall, bringing him closer to challenging Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record. Demonstrating incredible consistency, this was the 11th instance of Kohli scoring back-to-back centuries in ODIs, setting a new record for any player in the history of the 50-over format.

Following his century, Kohli pulled off his signature celebration and then raised his bat to acknowledge the cheering Raipur crowd. As the cameras shifted to the Indian dressing Gautam Gambhir along with India players were observed giving the 37-year-old a standing ovation.

Kohli on cusp of becoming World no.1 ODI batter

The outstanding performance has also propelled Kohli up the ICC ODI batting rankings, placing him just 32 rating points behind current number one, Rohit Sharma, as he closes in on reclaiming the top spot. Kohli was the world's premier ODI batter for an extended period, holding the number one position for over three years towards the end of the last decade. However, he has not occupied the top spot since he was displaced by Pakistan's Babar Azam in April 2021.
