India speedster Mohammed Shami lashed out on media reports claiming that he will also announce Test retirement after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the upcoming red-ball series against England. As Virat and Rohit announced retirement from the longest format of the game, a media outlet reported that Shami will also likely to bid adieu to Tests.
Shami who is currently featuring for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, took his Instagram to lash out at a report claiming his red-ball retirement.
"Very well done, Maharaj — start counting your days on the job now. How much adieu is left? You’ve already ruined our future like this! At least say something good for once. Today’s story was the worst. Sorry," wrote Shami.
Shami's last international outing came during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where unbeaten India defeated New Zealand in the final to clinch the title. He picked up nine wickets in five outings of the tournament. He ended his campaign as the fourth-highest wicket-taker after Matt Henry (10), Varun Chakravarty (9) and Mitchell Santner (9).
Shami will now be most likely to feature in the five-Test match series against England, which is scheduled to start from June 20. Shami has played 14 Tests in England and has scalped 42 wickets at an average of 40.50 with best figures of 4/57 in an innings. The upcoming red-ball series will be India's first assignment after a 3-1 humiliating loss in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Team India will feature with new captain in the upcoming series as Rohit has announced his retirement. Sports Tak earlier reported that young batter Shubman Gill will be India's new red-ball skipper and Rishabh Pant will be his deputy.
BCCI is yet to announce their squad for the England series, and as per our sources, the squad will be announced on May 16 or 17.
