Afghanistan's T20I captain Rashid Khan had a tough day at the office in The Hundred 2025 clash against Birmingham Phoenix. Rashid broke the record for most runs conceded in an innings in the Men's Hundred Competition. The leg-spinner who is leading wicket-taker in T20Is, conceded 59 runs from four overs.
The previous record belonged to former South Africa and Namibia player David Wiese. In the 2022 edition, he conceded 53 runs for Northern Superchargers against Manchester Originals. He shared the record with England's left-arm pacer David Payne who conceded 53 runs for Welsh Fire against Northern Superchargers in the 2023 edition. However, unlike Wiese and Payne, Rashid remained wicketless.
Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings introduced Rashid in the sixth over. After two runs from first four balls, he was hit for a six by Will Smeed. In his second over, Joe Clarke hit him for two sixes whereas Smeed hit a four. He was brought back into the attack when Jacob Bethell and Liam Livingstone were at the middle. He conceded only a boundary from Livingstone. It was in his last over that he took a beating from Livingstone. The Birmingham Phoenix hit him for a four, hat-trick of sixes and another four.
Livingstone remained unbeaten for 69 off 27 balls and helped Birmingham Phoenix chase down the target of 181 with two balls to spare and four wickets in hand.
Earlier in the game, Rashid contributed with a nine-ball 16 cameo, featuring two sixes. Donovan Ferreira starred with a 29-ball 63 featuring six sixes as Oval Invincibles posted a total of 180/8.
Rashid’s recent form
Before the game at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Rashid was in good form, bagging two three-fers. Against Kane Williamson's London Spirit, he took three wickets for 11 runs. In the home game against Manchester Originals, he claimed three wickets for 19 runs.
What Livingstone said after hitting Rashid for 26 runs in 5 balls
“I got a good record against Rash (Rashid), just by stepping across and slogging him, I try and get underneath him I know he likes to target the stumps and thankfully, it is my day today,” Livingstone said in the post-match presentation as he was adjudged ‘Hero of the match’.
Rashid’s next appearance
Rashid will have plenty of chances to get back in form ahead of T20 Asia Cup 2025 in UAE. After a three-day break, Oval Invincibles will take on Welsh Fire at Kennington Oval, London on August 16.
