In a 40-over game between third-division Australian clubs, the game was considered done and dusted when Surfers Paradise needed four runs from the last over with six wickets in hand. But Mudgeeraba Nerang & Districts Cricket Club captain Gareth Morgan achieved the unthinkable. Morgan got a wicket off every ball he bowled in the final over to create history and guide his side to a famous win.
Supers Paradise were 174/4 in the run chase of 178. The first to fall in the last over was M Johnson. The middle-order batter N Bowemeester remained stranded on the non-striker end as five golden ducks were registered in the last over.
The first four dismissals in the over were all caught. The last two tailenders got bowled in an attempt to win the match for their team with one hit. As per abc.net.au, Morgan is a local council worker. He ended up with magical figures of 7 for 16 in the seven overs he bowled. The other batter he got rid of in the middle overs was Jake Garland who scored 65 runs from 60 balls.
Earlier, Morgan had contributed with the bat as well. He was the top scorer for Mudgeeraba with 39 runs.
As per ABC, in professional cricket, the most wickets taken in an over is five. New Zealand's Neil Wagner is the first on the list as he claimed five wickets against Wellington for Otago in 2011. Bangladesh's Amin Hossain achieved the feat in 2013 for the UCB-BCB XI against Abhani Limited. The only Indian player on the list is Karnataka bowler Abhimanyu Mithun who took five wickets against Haryana in 2019.
"I remember thinking after I got the hat-trick — I don't want to lose this game now," Morgan told abc.net.au.
"When I saw the stumps go back on the last ball I couldn't believe it — I've never seen anything like it."
Morgan said that he will never be able to forget the reaction from his team as he hit the timber on the last ball.
"Everyone was going wild. It was incredible, I don't think anyone could believe it had happened," he said.
"It was definitely up there with one of my best moments.
"I'm happy to be part of history."
