Eoin Morgan to become next CSK head coach? R Ashwin makes big revelation

In a series of surprising events, Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has suggested two possible candidates to take over the coaching duties at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after Stephen Fleming's departure. The former New Zealand skipper stepped down from the position in July after enduring a disappointing campaign in the 2026 edition.

CSK to appoint Eoin Morgan as head coach?

The former CSK star claimed that the names of Eoin Morgan and MS Dhoni are making rounds within the franchise in recent days. However MS Dhoni's name is revolving around the role of caretaker for one season. Whereas Morgan is being considered for the head coach role.

On his official YouTube Channel, Ashwin claimed that Eoin Morgan's name is making strong rounds, as early discussions are going on while there are two scenarios about it. In the first scenario, Morgan accept the job immediately or someone else makes the team in the mini auction and then the former England captain takes it.

“I have a feeling Eoin Morgan might be coming… His name is doing the rounds strongly…; early discussions are on, no doubt. In this, two scenarios: Eoin Morgan- will he take it this year? Or someone else builds the team in a mini auction, and he takes it later?" Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Is MS Dhoni a possibility?

While continuing, Ashwin suggested that CSK may not necessarily need to appoint a permanent head coach immediately. As per him, Dhoni could effectively oversee the team for another season without formally taking up the position, letting the franchise delay its long-term decision. CSK could contemplate bringing in someone like Morgan ahead of the IPL 2028 mega auction.

“I have a strong hunch that under Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together… Personally, that route is the correct one. I still think so. Because the appointment will be a touch late. Because the mega auction is only one year away. … My strongest hunch is that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, like the shoots of a banyan tree, the others will work together. That’s my strongest hunch for at least the next one year," added Ashwin.

Eoin Morgan's coaching experience

Despite not having coached at the top level, Morgan has established himself as one of cricket's sharpest tacticians. He played a pivotal role behind England's transformation in white-ball cricket, eventually guiding them to the 2019 ODI World Cup title. Morgan also took Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2021 final, earning praise for implementing an aggressive style of cricket within the side. Currently, he serves on the board of directors at London Spirit in the Hundred.
