After Najmul Hossain Shanto was unable to recuperate from a groin injury, Mehidy Hasan Miraz was announced as the new captain for Bangladesh in their ODI series against the West Indies. Mehidy will be leading the Tigers in the 50-over format after leading them in the two-match Test series against the Caribbean side.
After a year, left-handed batter Afif Hossain Dhrubo has been called up again to the ODI squad. The 25-year-old last made an appearance in an international cricket match during last year's New Zealand tour. Zakir Hasan has kept his spot in the squad after playing in the ODI series against Afghanistan.
Nahid Rana kept his place in the squad after making an outstanding ODI debut against Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Towhid Hridoy's right groin injury prevented him from finding a spot in the squad. When he returns from a two-week rest period, the BCB medical staff will evaluate his injuries.
"Hridoy had complained of pain in his right groin region and subsequent investigations have confirmed the presence of a medical condition. He has been advised to rest, and we will reassess him in two weeks to determine his readiness to play," BCB Sports Physician Monzur Hossain Chowdhury said in a press release.
Shakib Al Hasan still unavailable
Shakib Al Hasan, who last played for the Tigers during the India tour, is still not a member of the Bangladeshi squad. The political unrest in Bangladesh also prevented the all-rounder from playing in his farewell Test match against South Africa at Mirpur.
Shakib is still more than capable of playing at the highest level for Bangladesh, according to BCB President Faruque Ahmed. However, he added that the cricket player needs to resolve his security-related problems.
"As for Shakib Al Hasan, I cannot provide a definitive answer. I want him to play, but his absence is not related to the cricket board. The reasons preventing his participation involve law enforcement and the court. It's not easy for me to address this,” Faruque said.
"If the issue is resolved, I still believe Shakib has the ability to play for the national team," Faruque added.
