Regarded as one of the modern-day greats, Rohit Sharma was a key figure for the Indian team in every format for several years. The batter especially dominated in both the white-ball formats and gave major contributions with the bat in the 2024 T20 World Cup as the Men in Blue ended their 11-year drought for an ICC title. Following the triumph, Rohit announced his retirement from the shortest format.
Then, by the end of 2024 came the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia. Rohit proved to be abysmal with the bat throughout the five-match assignment as India got defeated it by 3-1 and lost their chance of making it to their third-consecutive World Test Championship final. A few months after the series, Rohit announced his retirement from red-ball cricket which ended up being quite shocking for many as it came ahead of the important series against England.
Rohit was the catalyst to India's victory in Champions Trophy final
The 38-year-old is currently an active player in only the one-day format. Rohit's last ODI match was the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand where he played a valuable knock of 76 runs to propel the Men in Blue to the target 252 and win the coveted title at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Though Rohit is still among the best players for India in ODIs and is also the captain of the side, a report by the Hindustan Times has claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expected that Rohit would announce his retirement from one-day cricket following India's Champions Trophy triumph.
The report further stated that no discussions have taken place between Rohit and selection committee head Ajit Agarkar so far over the batter's future with the ODI team.
“Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.
Rohit is likely to be seen in action during the Men in Blue's three-match ODI series against Australia which is set to be played in October. The Indian team will be travelling Down Under for two white-ball series which will consist of three ODIs and five T20Is.
Meanwhile, Rohit was recently seen featuring for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. He had a decent campaign with the bat, scoring 418 runs in 15 matches as the five-time IPL champions made it to the playoffs, but got knocked out of the tournament by the Punjab Kings in the second qualifier.
