The scheduled toss for the third and final ODI match between England and the West Indies at the Oval in London faced an unexpected delay on Tuesday, June 3. Contrary to typical reasons for postponement, such as rain or a wet outfield, the hold-up was attributed to a peculiar circumstance, the late arrival of one of the participating teams at the venue.
Heavy traffic delays England vs West Indies' 3rd ODI toss
ESPNCricinfo reported that while the England players were observed engaging in their pre-match warm-up routines at The Oval, the visitors' dressing room remained unoccupied. The West Indies team had failed to reach the stadium on time, necessitating the postponement of the coin toss and the subsequent delayed start of the match. However, the reason for their tardiness was not due to any fault on the part of the visiting team's management or players. Instead, the significant traffic congestion prevalent in London was identified as the sole cause for their delayed arrival at the Oval for the final ODI of the series.
“Due to a delayed arrival of one of the playing teams, who are stuck in heavy traffic north of the river, the scheduled start of play will be delayed. Once all members of the playing teams arrive, the match officials will coordinate updated timings and discuss any impact on the schedule of play. We will update spectators with the schedule of play as soon as we are able to,” the official account of Surrey wrote on X.
However, after a brief delay the toss finally took place which saw England winning the flip of the coin and opting to bowl first against West Indies.

In the second ODI, Joe Root delivered an exceptional performance, crafting an unbeaten innings of 166 runs from 139 deliveries. His masterful knock was instrumental in England successfully chasing down a target exceeding 300 runs. At one point in their innings, England found themselves in a precarious position at 133 for 5. However, Joe Root's composed and determined batting ensured that England faced no further setbacks, guiding them to victory and securing the ODI series win.
