Team India scripted a famous 6-run victory over England at The Oval as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy finished at 2-2. The England tour eventually turned out to be a success for the Men in Blue, who were written off by many cricket experts before the series even began just because they had picked quite a young team. However, the side led by Shubman Gill recorded memorable victories at both Edgbaston and the Oval to give a fitting reply to all of their doubters.
Though the victory at The Oval will be remembered by Indian fans for years to come, former India cricketer Saba Karim feels that the Men in Blue's three-wicket win over Australia at The Gabba in the Border-Gavaskar series in 2021 was more impressive. Notably, the victory saw India become the first team in 32 years to defeat Australia in a Test match held in Brisbane.
“Brisbane was bigger. It had never ever happened before in Australia and that also with a very young side, with most of the regulars injured on the sidelines. For India to script that kind of a win was unbelievable. And generally, I think that's how you see a growth of a side- when you're able to do well and win matches, even when one or two of your regular players are not available," Karim told NDTV.
"Even in this Test match, for that matter, we didn't have Jasprit Bumrah, we didn't have Rishabh Pant, still we went out and won the last Test match. If you draw comparisons, let me talk about the Australia draw first. Australian draw was more difficult because the conditions were more variable and then you're against a top quality bowling attack. It was so good to see the batting display, that kind of zeal, that kind of rear guard action. England was different because one had to battle for a longer duration of time to script a draw and I think," he added.
Siraj was India's star performer at The Oval
Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj was the hero for India in their victory over England at The Oval. The pacer took a total of nine scalps during the match and recorded figures of 5/103 in the all-important final innings which saw the visitors bundle out the hosts for 367 while chasing down the target of 374 runs. The 31-year-old pacer was even adjudged as the Player of the Match for his fantastic bowling display.
Additionally, Siraj also finished as the highest wicket-taker of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with a total of 23 scalps under his name from 9 innings. He was the only Indian pacer who featured in all the five matches of the series and also stepped up big time in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah.
