Shubman Gill of India speaks with Harry Brook of England on day 5 of the 5th Test at The Kia Oval on August 04, 2025 in London, England.

Story Highlights:

Joe Root slipped 2 places to 3rd spot after single-digit scores in Lord's Test.

Gus Atkinson rises to 10th spot after fifer in Lord's Test.

England’s vice-captain Harry Brook has reclaimed the no.1 spot in ICC’s Test rankings for batters following his half-century and a duck in the Lord's Test win over New Zealand at the Lord’s. Brook has dethroned his teammate Joe Root who registered scores of 1 and 8 in the Test series opener.

With Root slipping two places, Australia opener Travis Head has taken the second spot. There were a few other major changes too. New Zealand's Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell slipped after underwhelming outings at Lord's. Williamson slipped to sixth with Kamindu Mendis taking his spot as fifth-ranked batter. Ravindra went down four places to 13th whereas Mitchell slid eighth places to 22nd.

New Zealand's Glenn Phillips made the most notable jump. With scores of 34 and 44 in a low-scoring affair, he moved up 15 places to become 40th-ranked batter.

Injured Henry suffers drop in rankings

In the bowling rankings there were a couple of major changes in top 10. Kiwi pacer Matt Henry, who got injured early in the Test, lost three positions and now ranked seventh. As a result, South Africa's Marco Jansen, Australia's Scott Boland and Pakistan's Noman Ali took fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Atkinson rises amidst controversial night out

Riding high on the fifer in the second innings of Lord's Test, England's Gus Atkinson rose seven places to enter top 10. However, it is unclear whether Atkinson will be able to hold the position for long. He may face sanctions for the nightclub altercation as him and Ben Stokes broke the midnight curfew. It is not certain whether Atkinson will play the next Test which begins on June 17 at Kennington Oval, London.

Another England pacer benefitted from the bowler-friendly Lord's pitch. Josh Tongue took five wickets in the Test and went up three places to take the 18th spot.

Meanwhile, India's Jasprit Bumrah remains the no.1 Test bowler followed by Australia's Mitchell Starc and skipper Pat Cummins.
