India’s in-form wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan on October 3 completed 1,000 T20I runs in the calendar year 2026. Kishan scored 20 runs from 18 balls in the gold medal match against Pakistan at Asian Games 2026 to achieve the rare feat. As he played a crucial role in India’s second consecutive Asian Games gold medal, Kishan will have his sights on breaking all-time T20I record for most runs in a calendar year and plenty of T20I action awaits him.

Kishan is only the seventh batter in T20I history to score 1,000-plus T20I runs in a calendar year. He is also the second India batter after former captain Suryakumar Yadav to achieve the milestone. In year 2022, Suryakumar was in stupendous form, scoring 1,164 runs at an average of 46.56 and strike rate of 187.43 including two tons and nine fifties. Kishan needs 160 more runs to break Suryakumar's record.
Suryakumar, Rizwan in Kishan’s way
The only batter from full-member sides (Test-playing nations) to score more runs than Suryakumar is Pakistan's discarded T20I batter Mohammad Rizwan. The wicketkeeper-batter was in supreme form in T20Is in 2021. He scored 1,326 runs from 26 T20Is at an average of 73.66 and strike rate of 134.89 featuring a ton and 12 fifties. It was the same year when Pakistan registered their first-ever World Cup win over India.
Who holds the record for most T20I runs in a calendar year?
Overall, Austria's Karanbir Singh holds the record for most T20I runs in a calendar year. Last year, he was on song, scoring 1,488 runs from 32 T20Is at an average of 51.31 and strike rate of 174.85 including two centuries and 13 fifties. Other batters from non full-member sides are Bahrain's Fiaz Ahmed (1,251 runs from 37 innings in 2025), Bahrain's Prashant Kurup (,1037 runs from 38 innings in 2025) and Austria's Bilal Zalmai (1,008 runs from 35 innings in 2025).
Kishan’s dramatic turnaround
Omitted from list of centrally contracted players by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for missing domestic cricket games, Kishan used the domestic cricket route to make a comeback to the side. He was the top run-scorer in Jharkhand’s maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) title win. He stormed back into the T20I side just ahead of T20 World Cup 2026, replacing vice-captain Shubman Gill. He played a huge role in India’s second consecutive T20 World Cup title win. He had an impressive Indian Premier League (IPL) season as well where he led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Pat Cummins absence for several games.
Kishan has gone from strength to strength. He recently made his ODI return as well. Many have backed him to be India’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2027. He may find himself in the ODI squad on New Zealand tour as well. Most recently, Kishan scored a record-breaking unbeaten 80 against Sri Lanka on a two-paced pitch in the Asian Games 2026 semifinal. Not just in white-ball cricket, he scored a record-breaking 270 in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final as well. He has made a case for his Test return despite wicketkeepers Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel in the squad.
How many T20Is are left for Kishan in 2026 to break records?
India have as many as 13 T20Is left in 2026. After winning a gold medal in Japan, India will play the five-T20I series against two-time T20 World champions West Indies at home from October 6 to October 14. Then, India tour New Zealand for the T20I series which is scheduled to take place from October 22 and November 1. After their longest tour of New Zealand, India will host Sri Lanka for a three-T20I series in December 2026. Until and unless the team management rests Kishan, he has plenty of games left in the year to get the record in his name.
Kishan needs 322 more runs to surpass Rizwan. In order to dethrone Karanbir, he will have to score 484 runs. Considering the amount of T20Is that need to be played, Kishan is expected to get the record in his name.
Will Kishan continue to bat at no.5?
Kishan moved down the order in the Asian Games 2026. In order to include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as an opener, Sanju Samson moved to no.3. Skipper Shreyas Iyer and the team management did not want to tinker with Shreyas Iyer’s position and opted to slot Kishan at no.5.
Ishan continues to top ICC rankings
Kishan is currently the top-ranked T20I batter in the world. As per the latest ICC rankings, he has 892 rating points. The best he has achieved is 916 rating points.
He is closely followed by his teammate Abhishek with 887 rating points. However, more changes are expected. After match-winning fifties in the gold medal match against Pakistan, Abhishek and Tilak Varma may get more rating points. Varma is currently ranked ninth, the third Indian batter in top 10.
India’s T20I squad for West Indies series -
The selectors made one change to the squad. Washington Sundar has been withdrawn from the squad. He will prepare for the Test series against New Zealand by turning up for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27. He has been replaced by Naman Dhir who made his ODI debut against West Indies. Dhir is capable of contributing with off-spin as well. Also, he may solve the problem of having plenty of right-handers in the side.
India’s updated T20I squad — Shreyas Iyer (c), Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma (vc), Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Naman Dhir.
Kishan’s T20I record vs West Indies
Kishan has played seven T20Is against West Indies and scored 125 runs at an average of 17.85 and strike rate of 93.28. The last time he faced West Indies was in the must-win T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eights match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. In the run chase of 196, he departed for 10 runs from six balls.
