New Zealand's retired T20I opener Colin Munro made a magnificent return to Trinbago Knight Riders as he smashed a 57-ball 120 in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 clash against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on August 17.
Munro registered the joint third-highest score by a batter in CPL history. He shares the third spot with Faf du Plessis who scored an unbeaten 120 for St Lucia Kings in the 2021 edition. The top spot belongs to Brandon King with an unbeaten 132 in CPL 2019, followed by Andre Russell's unbeaten 121 in 2018. Munro's 120 is also the highest score by a Trinbago Knight Riders batter in CPL history.
Munro’s scintillating knock and ‘C’ celebration
Munro had a seven-year stint with Trinbago Knight Riders which ended in 2022. His last CPL appearance was for St Lucia Kings two season ago. The southpaw used the powerplay overs well. In the sixth over, he hit St Kitts and Nevis Patriots skipper Jason Holder for a six and three fours. He reached his fifty from just 21 balls.
Munro and Alex Hales shared an 114-run opening partnership from 55 balls. Skipper Nicholas Pooran departed early but Munro continued to dominate the proceedings. He hit Naseem Shah for a six to reach his ton from 50 balls. He gestured 'C', his initial, as he celebrated his century by taking his helmet off and flipping his bat in the air.
Munro had a chance to break King's record for highest individual CPL score but Holder ended his stay at the crease in the penultimate over. The 38-year-old's 57-ball 120 was studded with 14 fours and six sixes. His knock helped Trinbago Knight Riders post 231/5.
Andre Fletcher, Rilee Rossouw and Holder got good starts but could not convert them into big scores. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots lost too many wickets in the slog overs and managed to post 219/7, losing the match by 12 runs. Usman Tariq was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets for 33 runs.
“It was a little bit for the family and a little bit for the frustration for not coming back here for the last few years. I am getting a bit older but I wanted to prove that I still have a lot to offer,” Munro said in the post-match presentation as he was adjudged the ‘Player of the match’.
Munro goes past Babar
Munro went past South Africa's Quinton de Kock and Pakistan's Babar Azam in the list of leading run-scorer in T20s (T20Is, franchise T20s and domestic T20s). Babar has 11,330 runs from 320 T20 games at an average of 43.07, including 11 centuries and 93 fifties. His T20 stocks have depleted and he wasn't picked in Pakistan's T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad as well.
Munro has 11,343 runs from 442 games at an average of 30.41, including six centuries and 68 half-centuries.
