The inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) winners are on the right path. With a 323-run win at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, New Zealand clinched the series 2-0. After Devon Conway and Tom Latham’s record centuries in both innings, Jacob Duffy’s fifer ended West Indies’ resistance. From 87 for no loss, West Indies were bowled out for 138 in just over two sessions on Day 5. West Indies end year 2025 without a win in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Duffy opens the floodgates with King’s wicket

New Zealand's overnight score was 43 for no loss in the run chase of 462. Brandon King started positively and reached his fifty from 63 deliveries. King looked to dominate but Duffy had the last laugh. The pacer broke the partnership by getting King caught at second slip. He scored 67 runs from 96 deliveries.

Then Ajaz Patel ended John Campbell's stay at the crease. The opener faced 105 balls to score 16 runs. The centurion of the previous innings, Kavem Hodge departed for a nine-ball duck to Patel. Alick Athanaze played a loose drive and got caught by the wicketkeeper as Duffy struck again. The pacer continued to strike in the first session. Justin Greaves departed for a 13-ball duck. At lunch break, West Indies were 99/5.

Hope’s block tactic of no use

Shai Hope looked to defend everything and occupy the crease. But it did not help the visitors' cause. Duffy struck early in the second session. He got rid of skipper Roston Chase with a short ball. Hope and Tevin Imlach adopted a similar approach. Patel ended Hope's stay at the crease by trapping him in front of the crease. He managed to score just three runs from 78 deliveries. Glenn Phillips joined the party by knocking over Kemar Roach. Anderson Phillip looked to entertain the crowd, hitting Phillips for a few boundaries. Going into the tea break, West Indies were 138/8.

Duffy ends with a fifer

Rachin Ravindra was introduced into the attack and he got Phillip's wicket. As soon as the new ball was available, Duffy was brought back into the act and he wrapped the proceedings by knocking over Jayden Seales for a five-ball duck. He completed his fifer as well. West Indies were bowled out for 138, losing the third Test by 323 runs.

Conway, Latham’s unique record

Conway was named 'Player of the match' for his scores of 227 and 100 in first and second innings respectively. Skipper Latham scored a century each in both innings as well. Conway and Latham became first opening pair to achieve the feat in Test cricket.

In the first innings, New Zealand posted 575/8 before declaring. Hodge scored a century to guide West Indies to 420. Duffy starred with a four-fer. Latham, Conway's centuries took the game away from West Indies grasp as the hosts posted 306/2 before declaring and set a target of 462.

Duffy was named ‘Player of the series’ for taking 23 wickets including three five-wicket hauls.
