Sri Lanka's wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella is set to be suspended from all forms of cricket due to a doping violation during the Lanka Premier League 2024. According to reports in Sri Lankan media he is said to have failed an anti-doping test for taking drugs during the league. The violation has put his career in jeopardy.  He has not taken a performance-enhancing drug instead it is a prohibited substance  The cricketer is most likely to get an indefinite ban. Interestingly the scenario has been a career-altering incident for him as not just cricket but he has also been suspended from all sports-related activities including training. He failed a doping test conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency. The Test happened at the end of the Lankan Premier League and the reports were against Niroshan.

“The suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice. The test, which was conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024, is part of SLC’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and per the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, is aimed at ensuring that cricket remains free from the influence of prohibited substances. SLC, together with the Ministry of Sports and SLADA, conducts these tests during domestic tournaments randomly to safeguard the sport against anti-doping violations. The commitment to a clean and fair game is of utmost importance to SLC, and any allegations of violations are taken with the highest level of seriousness," SLC stated the details in their official statement.

 

Dickwella in Lanka Premier League 2024


Dickwella led the Galle Marvels in the Lanka Premier League and used to open the batting for his team. He could only manage to score just 184 runs in 10 innings with a strike rate of 153.33, giving steady starts to his team. The Marvels sailed to the final but failed to win the title as they were beaten by a dominant Jaffna Kings. The 31-year-old’s career has been under scrutiny and full of controversies. In 2021, he along with Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis were banned for a year due to a bio-bubble breach in England during COVID 19 era. He has 2757 runs in Tests, 1604 runs in ODIs, and 480 runs in the T20Is. He is currently out of the side as he last played a One Day International in 2022 and a Test in 2023.
