Father couldn't do it, brothers Sam and Tom couldn't do it: Ben Curran becomes first in family to score ODI century 2 months after debut

Two months after his ODI debut, 28-year-old Ben Curran scripted history at Harare Sports Club on February 18. Ben becomes first in Curran family to score a century in international cricket. He scored an unbeaten 118 in the run chase of 241 against Ireland to help Zimbabwe win the series 2-1. Zimbabwe beat Ireland by nine wickets with 63 balls to spare in the series decider. 

Ben's father Kevin played for Zimbabwe as well. The fast-bowling all-rounder's highest score in ODIs was 73. He played 11 ODIs for Zimbabwe from 1983 to 1987.

Kevin's older son Tom Curran made his international debut in 2017. He is a fast bowler who can bat down the order. He is yet to score a fifty in international cricket. His highest in ODIs is 47 not out.

Kevin's youngest son Sam made his ODI and Test debut in June 2018. The fast-bowling all-rounder who bats in the middle-order got close to an international century once. He remained unbeaten for 95 against India in an unsuccessful run chase.

While Kevin had one List A century (domestic One-Day) to his name, Ben scored his second List A ton. 

Brothers react to Ben's maiden ODI ton

Reacting to older brother's century, Sam posted a message on social media. "GOOSEBUMPS!!!!! What a boy!!!!!!  So amazing!!!!!" .

Tom also shared a post on social media. On his Instagram story, he posted the moment Ben reached his maiden ODI century. He also wrote, "Boom. What a player!!!".

Big win for Ireland

The left-handed batter remained scored 14 fours in his unbeaten 118 from 130 deliveries. He had support from Brian Bennett. They shared a 124-run opening partnership. Bennett got out lbw to Graham Hume. Captain Craig Ervine remained not out for a 59-ball 69 as Ireland failed to make a comeback in the game.

"Unbelievable feeling. To be honest, in the first two games I faced too many balls in the powerplay. Luckily hit a few into the gap today. I think the surfaces were pretty similar. It got better today in the afternoon. Good feeling and very proud to be representing Zimbabwe," 'Player of the match' Ben said in the post-match presentation. 

 

 

So far, Ben has scored 191 runs from six ODI innings at an average of 38.20. In Tests, he has scored 178 runs from six innings.
