She revealed that he was dealing with anxiety and depression.

Hours after legendary English cricketer Graham Thorpe's wife revealed that the 55-year-old who had been battling anxiety and depression for several years died by suicide, the coroner confirmed that the English cricketer died after being hit by a train close to his home. Thorpe's wife Amanda said that in May 2022, the cricketer tried to kill himself as he was seriously ill. He recovered but decided to end his life earlier this month.

'Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life,' Amanda told The Times.

As per a report from MailOnline, he was hit by a train in east Surrey, on August 4 (Sunday), early in the morning. Paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We can confirm that the coroner has received a referral for Mr Graham Thorpe from the British Transport Police. A post-mortem examination has been undertaken and Mr Thorpe's body released to his family. An inquest will be opened on August 13," said a spokesperson for the Surrey Coroner's Office.

Thorpe's family on his demise

Thorpe has left behind a wife and four children in his family. His wife half said that he hardly ever discussed cricket at home and was a free spirit. Thorpe's eldest daughter from his second marriage, Kitty said that the family was vocal about the drastic step her father took.

“That's the Graham I know and remember and loved. Graham was a free spirit. My favourite memory of him is in Barbados, which he loved, enjoying a rum punch and listening to his favourite reggae after a swim. He was handsome, so handsome. He was funny and he made us all laugh so much,” Thorpe's wife added.

"We are not ashamed of talking about it. There is nothing to hide and it is not a stigma. This is the time now to share the news, however horrible it is. He had loved life and he loved us but he just couldn't see a way out," said Kitty.
