Harry Brook backtracked over his previous statement on the nightclub incident

Brook admitted to lying in order to preotect his teammates

England white-ball captain Harry Brook admitted that he lied to protect his teammates who were present with him during the nightclub incident in Wellington. He had originally said that he was alone when he had tried to enter the nightclub on October 31, but he has now backtracked from his previous claims and has said that some of his teammates were present with him during the time of the incident. Notably, Brook had been hit by a bouncer when the England team was touring New Zealand for a white-ball series during the fall of 2025.

Bethell and Tongue involved too?

Brook's statement comes after both Jacob Bethell and Josh Tongue were fined for their involvement in the incident and were being investigated by the cricket regulator according to a report by The Telegraph.

“I accept responsibility for my actions in Wellington and acknowledge that others were present that evening. I regret my previous comments, and my intention was to protect my teammates from being drawn into a situation that arose as a result of my own decisions. I have apologised and will continue to reflect on the matter. This has been a challenging period in my career, but one from which I am learning," Brook said as quoted by BBC.

Brook's previous statement on the matter

In an interview last week, Brook had refused to provide the full details of the incident that took place in Wellington and had clearlky said that he was alone during that time. He had also admitted to have been drunk at that time.

“There was no intention of going out, no intention of putting ourselves in a tricky situation. I took it upon myself to go out for a few more and I was on my own there. I shouldn’t have been there. I was trying to get into a club and the bouncer just clocked me, unfortunately. I wouldn’t say I was leathered. I’d had one too many drinks," Brook had said.

Brook was fined and had been given a final warning over his conduct for the bouncer incident. He had apologised to his teammates and supporters before England's ongoing white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. The 26-year-old has looked to be in great touch against the Lankan Lions so far and had played an incredible knock of 136 runs from just 66 deliveries in the third ODI. He will be looking to replicate that form in the shortest format especially with the 2026 T20 World Cup being right around the corner.
