England all-rounder Liam Dawson has announced his retirement from first-class cricket with immediate effect. Dawson returned to the Test side after eight years for Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after consistent performances for Hampshire in County cricket. The 36-year-old has opted to bid goodbye to the red-ball format to prolong his white-ball career. The announcement came on the day England announced the Test squad for New Zealand series at home.
"I've decided to retire from first-class cricket. It's a decision that I haven't taken lightly but I feel for the benefit of prolonging my career in white-ball cricket, the time is right," Dawson said in a statement.

"I'm extremely proud to have played over 200 games for Hampshire and have had some amazing memories with so many players over the years. I'm fully committed to playing white-ball cricket for Hampshire and continuing the success we've had.
"To the fans and members who have turned out over the years, I can't thank you enough for your support. Hampshire will always be my home, and I look forward to playing in front of you all at Utilita Bowl very soon."
Dawson’s limited Test career
Dawson has played four Tests so far and claimed eight wickets at an average of 54.75, featuring a four-fer. With the bat, he has 110 runs from seven innings at an average of 22, including an unbeaten 66.
Dawson retires as Hampshire first-class legend
However, Dawson has an impressive first-class record. For Hampshire, he is their third-highest run-scorer and fourth-highest wicket-taker of all-time. From 211 games, he has 10,424 runs at an average of 34.17, including 17 tons and 54 fifties. The left-arm spinner has 361 wickets at an average of 32.36, including 14 five-wicket hauls.
"Liam has been an outstanding servant to Hampshire Cricket. To have played over 200 first-class games for this county speaks volumes about his dedication and quality,” Hampshire's director of cricket, Giles White said.
"He leaves a huge hole in the team and will be hard to replace, especially for the remainder of this Championship season. He is the only Hampshire player of the modern era to represent the club in over 200 first-class appearances, which underlines just how rare an achievement that is at this level.”
Dawson continues to play white-ball cricket
Dawson was part of England's T20 World Cup 2026 squad and played in the semifinal where he bowled one over and went for 19 runs. In his previous ODI appearance, he claimed two wickets against Sri Lanka. It is yet to be seen whether he remains in the scheme of things for England’s white-ball squads. Meanwhile, he will be seen in action on May 22 in Hampshire's T20 Blast opener against Somerset.
