Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni is widely called as 'Thala' by his fans around the world which means leader in Tamil language. It has also given rise to 'Thala for a reason' meme on social media. Dhoni in a recent promotional event said that he knows about the meme.
Dhoni is not sure whether it is banter or not but he hailed his fanbase. He also said that they speak on his behalf whenever someone disrespects him.
"I am aware but I don't know the reason behind it. I don't know if it's funny or it is supposed to pull my leg or it's banter, whatever it is. I think my fans have turned it into something that's in my favor, that's what I feel. I've got brilliant fans, that's what I'd say. I don't need to open my mouth or say anything. They're the ones if they feel somebody has been nasty to me, they take care of it. So, I'm just keeping quiet and enjoy my life and try to play good cricket," the 43-year-old said at Rigi Prabhav 2024 event.
Dhoni on IPL future
Meanwhile, Dhoni opened up on his Indian Premier League (IPL) future. While he is yet to confirm his retention to the five-time IPL-winning franchise, he hinted that he will return for the next edition of the cash-rich league.
"I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play," said Dhoni in a promotional event for software brand Rigi, for whom he's a brand ambassador.
"When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That's what I want to do. It's not easy. The emotions keep coming, the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years," said the 43-year-old.
Dhoni as uncapped player for steal deal?
As per the new rules of the league, Dhoni can be retained as an uncapped player because he hasn’t played international cricket for five years. In addition, he hasn’t had a central contract from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). CSK can retain him for as low as Rs 4 crore or more.
