Jemimah Rodrigues-inspired India women's team fully dominated West Indies and hammered them by 49 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on December 15.
India thrash West Indies in T20I series opener
After posting a big total of 195/4 riding on brilliant fifties from Jemimah Rodrigues (73 off 35) and Smriti Mandhana (54 off 33), India bundled out West Indies for 146/7.. Titas Sandhu led the Indian bowling attack, claiming three wickets while Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav also contributed with two wickets each.
Jemimah Rodrigues steals show with stunning 28-ball fifty
Jemimah Rodrigues stole the show in the series opener with her fastest T20I fifty off just 28 balls, propelling India to their highest T20I score against the West Indies.
Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 195/4, surpassing their previous best of 185/4 against the West Indies in 2019. Notably, this was also India's third-highest T20I total, behind 201/5 against the UAE in the Asia Cup and 198/4 against England in 2018.
Jemimah Rodrigues put on a show while batting at no.3 and scored a blistering 73 runs off just 35 balls, striking at an impressive rate of 208.57. Her innings included nine fours and two sixes.
After a solid start from openers Uma Chetry (24 off 26) and Smriti Mandhana, who put on a 50-run partnership, Jemimah joined forces with Mandhana to accelerate the scoring rate. The duo formed an 81-run partnership off 44 balls. Unfortunately, Jemimah was run out in the final over, but by then, she had already played a crucial role in setting up a massive total for India.
In reply, West Indies never looked settled in the game as they got off to a shaky start with Titas Sadhu providing India the early breakthrough in the form of Hayley Matthews (1). Soon West Indies lost their second wicket as Deepti Sharma hunted down Shemaine Campbelle to leave West Indies reeling at 36/2. Qiana Joseph (49) and Deandra Dottin (52 off 28) did try to steady West Indies boat but they lacked support from the other batters and West Indies ended up losing the match by 49 runs.
