Injury scare for India! Captain Gill gets injured by Siraj's delivery in nets ahead of 1st ODI vs West Indies

A couple of days ahead of the ODI series opener against West Indies, captain Shubman Gill suffered an elbow injury while facing pacer Mohammed Siraj in the nets. At Thiruvananthapuram, Greenfield International Stadium, Gill needed medical attention after facing an injury scare.

As per a report by Cricbuzz, Gill needed bandaging on his right elbow. Later, veteran opener Rohit Sharma checked in on Gill as the captain did not resume practice due to pain in elbow.

Gill’s Test as ODI captain

The ODI series will be crucial to India’s preparation for the ODI World Cup 2027 next year on South Africa soil. Since taking over ODI captaincy, Gill has scored 604 runs from 11 innings at an average of 67.11 and strike rate of 107.85 including one century and five fifties. The ODI series would be a test for Gill as captain after a series loss on England tour.

Who can replace Gill if he doesn’t recover?

While Gill is expected to recover from the elbow injury, if he misses the first ODI of the series on September 27, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the automatic choice. In the ODI series against Afghanistan, Jaiswal had scored a century while Gill had batted at no.4 as Virat Kohli was out due to injury. Also, in Gill's probable absence, vice-captain KL Rahul is likely to lead in series opener. 

The other opening option for India is Ruturaj Gaikwad. But, Gaikwad’s previous ODI century came at no.4 position. Also, in the absence of T20I captain Shreyas Iyer who is on Asian Games assignment, Gaikwad is highly likely to bat at no.4 in the ODI series against the Shai Hope-led side.
