In a dramatic final that spanned across three days, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) clinched their fifth Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 14 years by overcoming the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT). Initially set for May 28 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the IPL 2023 final faced rain delays, pushing it to the reserve day, May 29. However, the rain played spoilsport again, extending the match to the early hours of May 30, concluding around 1:30 AM.
Under the astute leadership of MS Dhoni, CSK triumphed over GT with a five-wicket win. The iconic yellow brigade successfully chased down a target of 171 runs, with the match culminating on the very last ball. Follow the Sports Tak channel on WhatsApp
The heroics of Ravindra Jadeja, who smashed a six and a four on the final two deliveries, sealed the victory for CSK.
Reflecting on the thrilling finale, MS Dhoni nostalgically remarked at an event about the divine orchestration of the match. He stated, “It (the final) looked like it was very well scripted by God. You know, because it didn’t start on time. It was the only final that went on for three days. Then they scored the kind of runs they scored. The best thing that would have happened was that we would have gotten the target before the start of the inning, and that's literally what happened. And then, whenever we needed a boundary somehow, we got a boundary. So, it was more like a script," Dhoni said.
“If not a six, a minimum of four, somebody hits a four. Everything was going according to plan until the last over. Very happy that Jadeja scored the runs that were needed,” he added.
In the gripping climax, CSK required 13 runs in the concluding over. Mohit Sharma took the responsibility of bowling the final over, but Jadeja's brilliance ensured CSK reached the target.
