England registered a comfortable 21-run victory over West Indies in first T20I

England emerged victorious over West Indies by 21 runs in the first T20I of the three-match series at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Friday. The match saw the hosts win the toss and decide to bat first and though they lost opener Ben Duckett early in the second over, wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler formed a brilliant partnership of 80 runs with Jamie Smith.

Following Smith's departure in the eighth over for 38, wickets started to tumble on regular basis for England. However, Buttler kept the scoreboard moving from the other end. The 34-year-old played a terrific knock of 96, scoring six boundaries and four sixes before getting dismissed by Alzarri Joseph in the 19th over. Thanks to a late cameo of 23 runs from Jacob Bethell, England posted a big total of 188/6 in 20 overs.

Buttler registered his name in an unwanted list

Though Buttler did play a superb knock, he still achieved an unwanted feat with it and became the first-ever England wicketkeeper-batter to get dismissed in the 90s in T20Is. He also became just the fourth Englishman to get dismissed in the 90s in the shortest format, joining the likes of Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan and Jonny Bairstow in the unwanted list.

In reply, West Indies lost wickets on regular intervals from the start of their innings. Opener Evin Lewis was the top-scorer for them with his inning of 39 runs from 23 deliveries, however except for him, none of the batters were able to play big knocks as the English bowlers gave a fantastic performance and restricted them to 167/9 in 20 overs.

Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, who was featuring in just his 12th T20I, recorded career-best figures of 4/20 while both Matthew Potts and Bethell also took two wickets each as England registered a 1-0 lead in the series. The second match of the series will take place in Bristol on June 8 and the finale will be held in Southampton on June 10.
