Karnataka opener Prakhar Chaturvedi created history in Cooch Behar Trophy final against Mumbai. Chaturvedi smashed an unbeaten 404 off 638 deliveries, the highest score by a batter in the final of Cooch Behar Trophy history. His quadruple century featured 46 fours and three sixes and helped his side post a gigantic total of 890/8 on the board in Karnataka’s first innings.
The previous record belonged to legendary Yuvraj Singh who scored 358 for Punjab against Bihar in December 1999. The Bihar side included the likes of MS Dhoni. On the other hand, the record for the highest individual score belongs to Maharashtra Vijay Zol who scored 451 not out against Assam in the 2011-12 season.
Earlier, Mumbai batted first in the final at KSCA Navule Stadium. Opener Ayush Mhatre's 145 and Ayush Sachin Vartak's half-century helped them post 380 on the board from 113.5 overs. Hardik Raj was the pick of the bowlers with a four-wicket haul.
In reply, Karnataka openers shared a 109-run partnership. But Karthik SU lost his wicket to Prem Devkar after scoring 50 runs from 67 balls. Then Chaturvedi and Harshil Dharmani frustrated Mumbai bowlers. They completed their respective centuries and helped Karnataka take a lead as well. Finally, it was Akash Pawar who broke the partnership. Dharmani got bowled. He scored 169 runs from 228 balls featuring 19 fours and five sixes.
The score was 399/2 when Dharmani returned to the pavillion. Mumbai bowlers were not able to make a comeback. Chaturvedi and Karthikeya KP shared a 156-run partnership for the third wicket. Karthikeya missed a chance to score a century as he got out lbw by Manan Bhatt. He scored 72 runs from 107 balls including seven fours and two sixes.
Meanwhile, Chaturvedi had completed his double century. Samit David, son of India's head coach Rahul Dravid could not convert a good start into a big score. Samit scored 22 runs from 46 balls. Bhatt got another wicket in the form of Dhruv Prabhakar who faced just eight balls. Nutan struck again as well. Karnataka skipper Dheeraj Gowda departed for a single-digit score.
Hardik and Chaturvedi shared an 84-run partnership for the seventh wicket. He scored 51 runs from 80 deliveries before losing his wicket to Prem Devkar. Wicketkeeper-batter Yuvraj Arora became Devkar's second victim. When Arora departed, Karnataka had 717/8 on the board.
Chaturvedi found another partner in Samarth N. The opener reached his triple century but did not stop there. While Samarth batted with patience to reach his half-century, Chaturvedi created history as he crossed the 400-run mark.
Karnataka ended up winning the match based on an enormous 610-run first innings lead.
