England women suffered a massive blow just when they managed to return to winning ways in the ongoing T20I series against India women.
England women captain Nat Sciver-Brunt out of entire T20I series against India
England edged past India by five runs in the third T20I on July 5 to keep the series alive. However in a big setback for England, who are currently trailing 2-1 in their home T20I series against India, their captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has been ruled out for the remainder of the matches. The newly-appointed skipper sustained a left groin injury that kept her out of the third T20I, and subsequent scans have confirmed that her recovery will take longer than expected. Her focus will now shift to regaining fitness in time for the ODI leg of the tour, which is set to commence on July 16. Maia Bouchier has been called into the squad as her replacement.
In Sciver-Brunt's absence, Tammy Beaumont will continue to serve as the stand-in captain. The decision to sideline the all-rounder follows a period where her workload was already under careful management by the team. This was evident in the first two T20Is, where a pre-series plan was implemented for her not to bowl in an effort to ease her physical strain. Beaumont's captaincy debut in the third match, her 247th international appearance, was a successful one, as she led the team to a crucial victory.
"Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss the rest of the Vitality IT20 series against India due to the injury to her left groin she sustained in Bristol. Tammy Beaumont will continue to captain in her absence, with Maia Bouchier replacing Sciver-Brunt in the squad. Sciver-Brunt is expected to be available for selection for the start of the Metro Bank ODI series," England Cricket said in a statement.
Despite England's heavy 97-run loss in the opening match, Sciver-Brunt's individual performance with the bat was a standout positive, as she scored an impressive 66 off 42 balls. She picked up the injury in the second T20I, where she was dismissed for 13. Under Beaumont's new leadership, the team rallied in the third contest. In a nail-biting finish, England held their nerve to defeat India by five runs, keeping the series alive. The hosts will now aim to continue their comeback and level the series in the fourth T20I on July 9.
