South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma has been sidelined from the second Test against Bangladesh due to a persistent left elbow injury. Despite showing significant improvement, he is not yet fully recovered to participate in the match.

Temba Bavuma ruled out of 2nd Test against Bangladesh

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Friday, October 25, that Bavuma will be unavailable for the second Test, scheduled to begin on October 29 in Chattogram.

Aiden Markram will once again captain the Proteas in Bavuma's absence. South Africa has climbed to fourth position in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 rankings after securing a dominant seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test.

The Proteas chased down a target of 106 runs in just 22 overs on the fourth day. Kagiso Rabada's impressive nine-wicket haul played a pivotal role in South Africa's victory, marking their first Test win in the subcontinent in 15 years. Their last victory in the region came against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2014.

South Africa's recent Test victory in Bangladesh marks a historic moment, ending a decade-long drought in the subcontinent. This achievement is particularly special for the current squad, as none of the players had previously been part of a winning South African team in Asia.

Only five players in the playing XI had prior Test experience in the subcontinent, and eight out of the 15-man squad had toured Asia before. Notably, none of them were members of the South African team that last tasted success in Galle in 2014.

South Africa's impressive seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test has propelled them to the fourth position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. With this win, South Africa's point percentage has risen to 47.62, surpassing New Zealand and England. Bangladesh, on the other hand, has slipped to seventh place with a point percentage of 30.56. India and Australia continue to hold the top two positions in the WTC standings.
