Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is all set to lead Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, a source told Sports Tak. Dhawan will take over the captaincy from Mayank Agarwal, under whom PBKS narrowly missed out on IPL 2022 playoffs spot.
The decision comes nearly two weeks before the deadline for franchise to reveal their list of released and retained players ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction which is expected to be hosted in Istanbul, Turkey.
Dhawan made his PBKS captaincy debut in the last season when Agarwal was injured. Agarwal led PBKS in 14 games where he had a fifty per cent win record. Dhawan will be PBKS’ 14th captain.
Earlier, the left-handed batter had led Sunrisers Hyderbad in IPL 2013 and IPL 2014. He captained SRH in 16 games from which the team won seven.
Dhawan has been captaining India's second string ODI side in recent tours as well.
PBKS is one of the few teams who are yet to lift the IPL trophy. Dhawan was picked by PBKS for Rs 8.25 crore in the mega auction after an intense bidding war with his former franchise Delhi Capitals (DC).
Dhawan finished IPL 2022 as PBKS' highest run-scorer with 460 runs from 14 innings at an average of 38.33 including three half-centuries. On the other hand, Agarwal managed to score just 196 runs from 12 innings at an average of 16.33 including one half-century. Mayank was retained as captain for Rs 12 crore before the mega auction.
