MA Chidambaram Stadium to host first-ever BBL game outside Australia
Melbourne Renegades-Perth Scorchers clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as Chepauk, will serve as the opening fixture of the 16th edition of the Big Bash League. Scheduled to begin at 2:40 PM IST, the game will be played after the fourth day's action of the opening Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth.
The announcement was made jointly by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, underlining the role of cricket in strengthening ties between the two nations.
Explaining the significance of the move, Cricket Australia's General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, Alistair Dobson, said:
"Our sport has such an authentic connection in India. This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments and shows that cricket is a connector for both our countries."
Dobson also expressed confidence that the fixture would attract unprecedented global interest.
"We're hugely excited by the opportunity and we expect the match will be the most-watched game in Australian domestic league history for any sport."
Why Chepauk was chosen
MA Chidambaram Stadium is one of India's most iconic cricket venues, having hosted numerous memorable IPL encounters involving Chennai Super Kings, along with several international classics over the years.
Cricket Australia selected Chepauk with the endorsement of the BCCI following a venue inspection earlier this year. Officials believe staging even a single BBL fixture in India will significantly boost the league's fan engagement, television audience and commercial appeal in the world's largest cricket market.
The decision also comes as the BBL explores private investment opportunities for its franchises, with Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers expected to be among the first teams to gauge investor interest if the proposed ownership model is approved.
The venue also holds special significance for Australian cricket. It hosted Australia's opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup before Pat Cummins' side bounced back to win the tournament, and Chepauk is also set to stage the second Test of next year's Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
