Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin feels that Sarfaraz Khan deserves to be given another chance at the international circuit. The batter gave sensational performances for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy. He has been absent from international cricket since 2024, but his performance at the domestic circuit may see him receive a call-up.
Sarfaraz credits Azharuddin
Sarfaraz had recently credited Azharuddin for helping him train against reverse-swing and according to a report by Sportstar, he had even waited 45 minutes to meet the latter after he had completed all his appointments. The former cricketer was glad to see Sarfaraz score big after spending time with him.
“At the end of the day, he went and played. He scored those runs, and he should take all the accolades. I am very thankful that he took my name, but it was not required. As long as he scores runs and succeeds, I am very happy. That will be the best gift he can give me,” Azharuddin told Sportstar.
“He is a good, attacking player who can change the situation of a game very quickly. He doesn’t like being dominated by the bowler. As a batsman, you need to score runs. If you allow a good bowler to dominate, you are in trouble. I don’t know how the pitch was, but I believe the ball was swinging and the bounce was variable. So for him to score at a good rate underlines his quality," he added.

Azharuddin believes that the selectors need to bring Sarfaraz back to the Indian team as not only is he an attacking player, but has also given performances that are good enough for him to be brought back into the set-up.
“He [Sarfaraz] deserves another chance to play for India. He has scored runs everywhere, and India needs good attacking players. If you are scoring runs but you still don’t get a chance, it gets very disappointing. But I’m sure he will get it very soon," Azharuddin stated.
Sarfaraz's exceptional form for Mumbai
Meanwhile, Sarfaraz had played an incredible knock of 227 for Mumbai in their previous Ranji Trophy fixture against Hyderabad. He has been in terrific form for Mumbai and has recently become one of their most important players across the three formats. It remains to be seen if he will be able to make his return to international cricket after over an year of absence.
