Indian captain Rohit Sharma is known for giving his players freedom with accountability and that is seen as his style of captaincy. Rohit empowers his teammates to play their natural game while setting clear expectations with his calm demeanor. When necessary, he provides constructive feedback, and when a player fails, he effectively conveys his message without using words with his subtle but telling responses. During an award ceremony, India's star pacer Mohammed Shami pointed this out, saying that Rohit is a captain who gives his players a lot of freedom, allowing them to play with confidence and without being put under too much pressure.
"The best thing about Rohit is that he gives you freedom. Agar aap uske hisaab se sahi nahi utre, to unke thode se reaction bahar aane lagte hain. Wo aapko bateyga ki aapko ye karna tha, ya ye chaiye tha. Fir bhi aap uspe khare nahi utre, toh fir jo hum screen pe jo reactions dekhte hain, jo hum bina bole samajh jaate hain na, wo aane lagta hai [The best thing about Rohit Sharma is that he gives you freedom. However, if you don’t meet his expectations, his reactions start to show a bit. He’ll tell you that you should have done this or needed to do that. But if you still don’t live up to it, then the reactions we see on the screen, the ones we understand without him saying anything, start to come out]," Shami said during an award function.
The Indian team became world champions once again under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. He became the second Indian skipper after MS Dhoni to win the coveted T20 World Cup title. He received the Men’s International Cricketer of the Year award at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards.
Rohit gives credit to his three pillars
During the ceremony, Indian captain Rohit Sharma praised and gave credit to former Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah. He even called them the three pillars that helped him bring the best out of his players.
"It was my dream to transform this team and not worry too much about the stats, the results, to make sure that we create that environment where people can go out there and play freely without thinking too much. That is what was required. I got a lot of help from my three pillars, who are actually Mr Jay Shah, Mr Rahul Dravid (and the) chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar. That was very critical for me to do what I did and obviously not to forget the players, who came in at different points in time and helped the team to achieve what we achieved," Rohit said.
