Right ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have acquired the services of West Indies' star all-rounder Romario Shepherd from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a trade deal. IPL 2024 auction is slated to take place in Dubai on December 19. Notably, it will be a mini auction and will be a day-long affair to be held overseas for the first time ever. Meanwhile, Shepherd featured in just one match in the IPL 2023 and recorded a duck in LSG five-wicket triumph over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

MI anounced the development on social media on Friday, November 3.

“Mumbai Indians have acquired the services of West Indian All Rounder Romario Shepherd following a successful trade with Lucknow Super Giants,” read the MI's post on X. Although the Paltans have not released any player to LSG so far.

At 28, Romario Shepherd has carved out a niche for himself in the international cricket with his all-round skillset. His prowess is not limited to bowling, however, as he is equally known for his batting ability to close innings with a flourish, thanks to his power-hitting skills.

Shepherd's batting statistics in T20I cricket for the West Indies are a testament to his impact on the game, boasting 301 runs in 31 matches at an admirable average of 37.62 and an impressive strike rate of 153.57. These numbers not only illustrate his consistency but also his capacity to score runs quickly — a coveted skill in the fast-paced T20 format.

The Guyanese all-rounder began his journey in domestic cricket with the Regional Super50 competition in 2016. His standout performances quickly made him a notable figure in cricketing circles, eventually catching the attention of the Guyana Amazon Warriors and earning him a coveted Caribbean Premier League (CPL) contract. His ascension continued, leading to his West Indies national team debut in 2018.

Shepherd has proven his mettle in the T20 circuit with a remarkable bowling record — claiming 109 wickets in 99 games, with an average of 23. In T20Is he has secured 31 wickets in 31 matches at an average of 29.70.

As Shepherd prepares to join the ranks of the MI, his third IPL team after stints with SRH and LSG, his reputation as a valuable T20 player is well-recognised. The Mumbai Indians, who secured a commendable fourth-place finish in the IPL 2023, with eight wins from 14 games, will be keen on leveraging Shepherd's talents in the upcoming season.
